I love this movie I thought I could watch a movie with 2 characters that doesn't go anywhere but it works!

What's most amazing about this film is how easily you forget you are watching a movie, and not just two friends having dinner. An eccentric theater director and old friend (whose been avoiding the dinner for years) a struggling playwright, have dinne...(read more) r and discuss...well just about everything. Roger Ebert called this 'the only movie without clichés", and while it's not completely true(what really could be), it does manage to invert any expectations of characterization or plot.

The conversation is NOT random either, all ideas explored here get re-integrated into the film later on, what begins with the "director" telling the details of his breakdown and bizarre attempts at spiritual and artistic fulfillment, in a cross between the most pretentious theater professor you have ever seen and the most interesting man in the world from those "Dos Euis"commercials. The play-write....don't know why I keep calling them by these titles, the characters names are their names in real life Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn (who it's nice to see in a serious role after his mad scientist Southland Tales bit)...anyway Shawn mostly listens to Andre who obviously loves attention and hearing himself speak, but later interrogates, contradicts, and adds much needed balance to Andre's new age excesses and paranoia. Not that it comes out as clearly or as neatly as Andre's monologue, Shawn is a writer, more comfortable on paper than in real life(there's an Ingmar Bergman quote about this idea early on), and you can literally see the thoughts and reactions building behind his eyes, even as he can't fully express them. Also little details about Andre abound, liberal guilt mostly (listen for how many times he compares himself to Nazi's)....but I could go on like this forever. The point is the characters are genuine and lyrical even as they trip over their words.

If you want to see some of where Richard Linklater got his sprawling conversational wit, "My Dinner With Andre" is absolutely necessary. It's rare to get a real intellectual and emotional charge out of a movie, "Before Sunris/Sunset" and "Waking Life" did it, Spalding Grey's "The Monster", comes close, but this movie explodes with life, at it's most fascinating and most banal. This is the thrilling conversation you've been waiting for.

Louis Malle's somber but sometimes sarcastic pretense of two men talking for 2 hours at dinner is perhaps one of the most banal flicks of all time. You want to snooze, rent it.

This movie likely holds most of the answers to life -per myself- and I recommend it to anyone with a flare for self reflection, adventure, and pure appreciation that we are 'perfect as we are' and are capable of more than we often engage in, and in addition, more than we give ourselves credit for.

Pretty redundant as a piece of cinema, 'Andre' does have a screenplay of merit but this is extremely staid, stage-bound film-making and about as visually interesting as an old grey sweater in a second-hand shop and technically speaking, amateurish.

However, I liked the enigmatic waiter with his vaguely disapproving air and i think pondered the significance of his character more than the dialogue between the 2 protagonists.

I like the story in this movie ..BUT it's BORING! Long-winded and dull actors. But the screenplay is superb.

This movie covers a lot of cultural references from Bergman (both Ingrid and Ingmar actually) to William Blake to Schopenhauer. Some parts of the film anger me, some are pretty authentic. The film takes you on a journey though. Some parts are even sort of intense. You barely notice how spare it is, because it is imaginative.

Yes, the film is a conversation. Does this make it one of the greatest films ever? Yes! The interaction is both human, down-to-earth and like any film naturally does, perfectly films the moments of the human condition. The conversations themselves are enriching. The film is almost like a good friend, 2 hours of wonderful, warm enjoyment.

Basically revolving around two men having a dinner at a restaurant and chatting about different things. The conversation actually is the whole movie. Looks very theater-like... and kind of very intellectual stuff.

Fasctinating dialogue...between these 2 old friends/colleagues (Wallce Shawn plays a down on his luck writer willing to sit through anything for the possiblity of a great lunch & network contact!)....The one, who had been a director (payed ty an agile if not youthful Andre Gregory) moved me to tears with his across the world search for peace..GRATEFUL to have seen this in my early youth! FIND THE PATIENCE TO SIT THRU THIS TREMENDOUS CHARACTER STUDY (WTIH FOREIGN SUBTITLES!)

What is so entertaining about two people talking while having dinner together? Well, watch this film and be mesmerized.

An interesting movie, with a lot of thought-provoking ideas. Unfortunately, I hate Andre Gregory, seeing as how he looks like the most pompous ass on the planet. A better title would be "My Dinner Listening to Crazy Ramblings and Looking Perplexed". However, the pivotal character miraculously doesn't make the film bad; especially seeing as, when you think about it, the film has the ability to make you reconsider aspects of your life.

A great dialogue movie. I love that Wallace Shawn couldn't quite make it through the script without saying "inconcievable."

a great exercise in purely dialog based film making. the camera never leaves the dinner table and rarely even makes a cut. minus half a star for ridiculous hippieism from Andre, otherwise a great film. WATCH IT!!!

Now THIS is the kind of movie that REALLY gives me something to cheer and shout "yes!" from my seat. Smart and thought provoking - sometimes manic - sometimes sweet - never boring. That is the fastest any movie ever wizzed by me and I was so sorry when dinner was over and it was time to pay the check. This old film is a wise old thing to behold.

While there's not a lot of action and the pace is slow, the dialogue between the two characters is absolutely fascinating.

The best exercise in dialogue. The two actors captivate with only their words and ideas for almost 2 hours. Your imagination works wonderously to visualize their thoughts.

One huge star for Wally Shawn. He earns it--and I mean EARNS it--not for his acting ability--although I love him as an actor--but for sitting there and patiently and politely listening to the interminable droning of Andre. The prototypical "dinner from hell."

I'm sure it's very interesting and thought provoking, but they made me watch this in high scool philosphy class and all I wanted to do was flirt with the girl next to me. I was bored. Would watch again now with more maturity.
