MCT:August 28, 2008This is probably the first time I have said this in any of my reviews,I have Never in my life seen acting done quite this well.Daniel Day Lweis was Stellar as always however what Paul Dano brought to the table was very intense!This movie is nothing short of visually Spectacular and and amazing story.You will not get bored,You will not be disappointed,I was glued the entire time **DO NOT MISS THIS ONE**

PT Anderson has yet to direct a sub-standard film. His second, Magnolia, is in the top three of my all time favorite movies list. A list which is now one title longer..."There Will Be Blood" is a fascinating look at the burgeoning oil well drilling industry and a man who has made his fortune by it. Phenomenal performance by Daniel Day-Lewis, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. Paul Dano, who I had never heard of before, impressed me almost as much as Day-Lewis. "There Will Be Blood" starts out as a fairly conventional movie. But there are whole scenes that are practically surreal (Eli Sunday's preaching, the baptism). I recommend it highly.

I don´t know what to say ´cause everythings has been told before, but personally I think that There Will Be Blood is much better than No Country for Old Men. -
Unbelievable movie. The suspense, acting, and characters were so on cue to display the feeling of the time so authentically in this film.

MCT:August 21, 2008Yes, DDL?s performance was amazing. (But I think Paul Dano was underrated in this film, big time.) Yes, it looks good?I?m sure that has something to do with cinematography or whatever. But, really, did it HAVE to be this long? I was a little bored at points. If it weren?t for DDL, the scenes b/n him and HW, and the end (which I thought was clever, but it seems to get bashed around here), I would have rated it 2 stars.

Having viewed There Will Be Blood for the second time last night I am still reeling in the wake of its perfection. Paul Thomas Anderson takes his direction to a new level, filming on a larger scale than he ever has, and doing so with the creativity and conviction that will ensure his place as one of the finest film makers of this generation. Every shot is stunning in its composition, framing, and lighting, serving the complexity and multi layered nature of the story. Despite Anderson's seminal direction and cinematography the film is owned completely by the performance of Daniel Day Lewis. He provides a towering character study of a man driven only by a sense of greed and competition. Many a story has centered around the destructive nature of greed but no actor has captured it with quite as much passion and intensity. By its conclusion, his Daniel Plainview is a shallow, souless man, destroyed by his own unwavering quest for wealth. Day Lewis is in almost every scene and is utterly commanding whenever on screen. His complete transformation and exploration of the Plainview psyche is on par with that of De Niro in Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, Pacino in the Godfather, or any one of Brando's best performances. The performance is easily the best of the decade if not one of the best in film history. Dano is worthy support as Eli Sunday, and the mere fact that his character can share the screen with Day Lewis is a testament both to the writing and to his performance.
Johnny Greenwood's score is is the perfect counterpoint to the film, bordering at times on creepy, its edgy, off kilter sound enhances Plainview's descent into madness.
This is an emotionally draining, yet completely stunning masterpiece, and an exercise in film making perfection. -

Paul Thomas Anderson has been one of my favorite directors for over 10 years now. His second film Boogie Nights was so perfect, so crazily wonderful that I instantly knew he was a filmmaker that would forever be remembered. His follow-up Magnolia was also a brilliant piece of filmmaking, his version of a rambling Altman film. With his fourth film Punch-Drunk Love, it was almost like he was taking some time off, doing something small and fun, it was far less ambitious than his previous films, but also very well made and a fully interesting film. There Will Be Blood is probably my favorite film of 2007, an incredible masterwork, something that I didn't even believe he was capable of. Which in my eyes, moves him among the all time greats, with only five films under his belt. My only complaint is that it takes him two to three years to make a new film, but they're well worth the wait.
Blood began as an adaptation exercise, P.T. wasn't sure himself that he was capable of creating an epic period piece, so he began by adapting some chapters from the book Oil!. Once he realized that something good was coming together, he wrote the entire film. He only saw one actor with the gravity to be able to play Daniel Plainview, Daniel-Day Lewis; and rumor has it that if he had said no, the film would have been scrapped. Let's thank the movie-making gods that it came together.
The film begins with Plainview working by himself deep within the earth, painfully digging out his silver-mine. On a trip back down the ladder a rung breaks free and he takes a long tumble, waking up with a broken leg he must claw his way out to survive. It's a gritty scene that shows us exactly what kind of man he is. The film moves to a few years later, when he discovers oil for the first time; another accident kills one of his workers, which leaves him with an adopted son. Time jumps again, to when he's really coming into his own, giving his already famous "I'm an oilman..." speech.
The film really takes off when he hears about some land ripe with oil and he moves into this small town, buying up all the land surrounding it, building the area's first oil rig and becoming a full blown oil barren. There is only one man that dares stand up to him, Eli Sunday, the local preacher and the son of the first man that Plainview bought land from. He feels betrayed because his family didn't benefit financially from the oil. He is constantly trod upon by Plainview, belittling him, even as he's becoming a well known religious profit.
The film is an amazing character portrait of a man drunk on his own power. Daniel-Day Lewis portrays Daniel Plainview as an incredibly cold man, he has absolutely zero compassion for anyone, except for his son; but he's even willing to throw him aside when it comes to his business. It's sickening, yet completely fascinating to watch as Plainview spirals down into his own lonely world, where only he and his oil exist. The film ends with him so caught up in it all, that human life means nothing.
The film will leave you feeling disgustingly refreshed, and give you a bit of an understanding of why the world is the way it is. These are the type of people that shaped the world, the ones with the lust for power and money, where nobody stands in their way on the way to the top. It's sad, but it's the truth.
There Will Be Blood is a full fledged masterpiece. Daniel-Day Lewis deserved the Oscar for best actor, while he's slightly over-the-top (I. Drink. Your. Milkshake!), he gives a fully realized performance, one that is also endearingly entertaining. Jonny Greenwood's score is so odd that it is a little jarring at first, but by the end, I couldn't have imagined another composer trying to capture the madness. Writer/Director Paul Thomas Anderson, proves that he can work in any genre; this is the best historical epic of the decade. The film is so beautifully made that you can practically taste the dust and oil. Every frame oozes reality, like we're witnessing history unfold before us.

Outstanding act of Lewis in the role of teh charismatic prospector. Great screenplay.
I just don't like Dano in the role of the hypocritical preacher, since he already played an extreme religious in "The King". -

Beautifully shot, landscapes that are used are amazing. Day-Lewis' character is so involved and changes so much over time. Dano compliments Day-Lewis well matching his power in performance and being Plainviews almost complete opposite. The character development is exceptional. There is some comparison to No Country For Old Men but this is much better, it has more involved characters and There Will Be Blood has a more artistic feel to it.
A very good period piece with suitable acting. -

This story is quite interesting, but strange at the final scene I ever saw. And Daniel Day-Lewis does the greatest performance as an oilman, who not least by capitalising on what he perceives as weaknesses - others may consider them virtues - of those around him via his sheer ruthlessness. That should be correct for Day-Lewis who garnered a 'Best Actor' Oscar.

Incredible film, seeing daniel plaintiff's decent into madness was absolutely fascinating, however, the only downside that I could see was that it was quite difficult to connect with the main characters, but, overall, I thought the film was a potential epic.

Daniel Day-Lewis just needs to show up, and any movie is instantly a classic. He could make "Meet the Spartans" a Oscar contender. A really great movie, if a tad long. I was never bored, but I could notice when I felt like thing weren't going as fast as they could. My only complaint is that sometimes I felt like I was missing something about a character's motivation (especially H.W.), but then there would be some amazing scene (the bowling alley, the baptism, etc) that made me not care anymore, and just sit back and watch some amazing actors work. Paul Dano deserves a lot of credit for this movie. He is creepy and cowardly and really fun to watch. A movie deserving of all its praise, and I really want to watch it again, which is NOT my typical reaction to a movie like this. Thumbs up.

It's definitely not for everyone.
But i've never been so captivated by one character as much as i did in "There will be Blood". Daniel Day Lewis deserved every bit of praise that he got and more. And surprisingly Paul Dano was fantastic in the supporting role.
The direction and the writing of the film is also brilliant. It's a shame that Paul Thomas Anderson didn't win the award.
But Robert Elswit deserved the award for cinematography- amazing! -

Aside from Daniel Day-Lewis' amazing performance, and the beautiful cinematography, oh, and the chillingly intense score, oh..... Do you get where I'm going with this? Individually, the pieces of this film are incredible. But for some reason, when they're put together, it's not as good as they were apart. Regardless of this fact, the film is worth viewing and is very very good. PTA just doesn't do it for me.

A complete non event. Boring story, boring characters. Absolutely dull. I can only assume people say they like this film because they think they are supposed to. I want my two and a half hours back. I can't even be bothered to give this pile of shite half a star.

There Will Be Blood is by far the best film of 2007. Daniel Day-Lewis gives, yet again, one of the best performances in cinema history. I?d say he has two in the top five. Anyway, this performance is so real, so personal, and so intense that you have trouble believing that he is playing a character. Sure I could go on talking about his performance, but that would take too much time to write and I?m not going to. This film also has a great performance from Day-Lewis? counterpart Paul Dano. He plays the town?s preacher and you come to realize that the money hungry Day-Lewis character and the supposedly righteous Dano character have a lot more in common than you might think. Aside from the acting, the cinematography in this film is some of the best I have ever seen in a film, and believe me, I?ve seen a lot of them. You actually feel you are living in early 1900s California because everything looks so natural as if you were standing five feet away from it. Paul Thomas Anderson is genius for writing this. It as credited as being based on the novel Oil! by Upton Sinclair, but it is far from based. He literally took one page from that book and created a completely new story and I applaud him for that. Overall, it is one of the best pictures I have ever seen.

Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most amazing actors of our time, simply amazing in this movie. The cinematography was breath-taking and the sceneries were gorgeous. I really felt like I was there. Not to mention I really enjoyed the music and plot twists! The only negative thing I can say was that it was about an hour too long. Other than that it was wonderful! :)

MCT said he would have had made a better title. After seeing the whole movie, I firmly disagree. The title works both ways: The blood of the Lamb of God and the blood shed by Lewis in the film. It is ironic, too, because obviously Lewis' character does not believe, only is "saved" to benefit his own agenda. An excellent film and the kind of character study for anyone who wants to get into acting.

Rotten tomatoes so far has given there Will Be Blood an 100% fresh rating, some saying it's P.T Anderson's best work which means a lot considering he directed Magnolia.

I don't know Cody Franklin, but he sounds like a pretty smart guy and I agree with him 100%. On the other hand, he seems like a dusche.
